New Huntingburg mural approaching completion

The final touches are being applied to the new mural highlighting the alley between Butcher & Barrel and the former Overtime.
Artist Kacy Jackson has been hard at work this week painting the mural that extends up the three-story building’s edge closest to the street, accenting the entrance to the alley. The mural helps turn the alley into a vibrant space that draws in both residents and visitors. Alongside added features like planters, seating areas, and decorative lighting, the mural enhances the alley’s overall appeal and functionality.
The work is being completed as the final component of the Alley Activation Project, which is funded through the 2021 READI 1.0 Grant. This initiative is designed to encourage economic growth and create a vibrant corridor connecting Huntingburg’s historic downtown area to the Huntingburg Memorial Gym.
The estimated cost for the alley improvements was approximately $344,458.12, and the city was awarded grants to help fund the project. In October of 2022, the city was awarded a $110,819 Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative grant from the Indiana Uplands ROI. As part of the match for the grant, the city was able to include work done during the Fourth Street improvements for their portion of the project total ($115,000). This included updating the storm sewers underneath the alley, adding overhead lighting, and installing parking bollards at the entrance. The IU Center for Rural Engagement also awarded the city two grants totaling $39,286 for the project.
The remaining amount on the project is covered through the Community Development budget ($20,000) and funds from the American Rescue Plan Act ($60,000).
“I am extremely grateful to the former Mayor Steve Schwinghamer and the members of the committee that worked hard to secure the funding for this project and the time spent planning,” said Mayor Neil Elkins.
The mural features references to various aspects of the city’s history, as well as its connections to baseball, basketball, and film.
