New resource center brings needed assistance for local Latino community

Huntingburg — The City of Huntingburg and Asociación Latinoamericana del Sur de Indiana (ALASI) will celebrate a community milestone on September 15 at 1:30 p.m. when the new ALASI Resource Center opens at 511 E 4th Street in Huntingburg.
The new center signifies a significant step forward in providing essential resources and assistance to the local Latino community. The ALASI Resource Center, also accessible through the website https://www.alasiindiana.com, will support the Latino population in Dubois County and surrounding areas by providing a hub for essential resources and assistance that overcome language barriers and is designed to foster community growth.
Though discussions about the need for this type of resource center have been going on for several years, the vision began to coalesce around the creation of the center about a year ago. It led to the merging of the Asociación Latinoamericana del sur de Indiana (ALASI) and the Latino Collaboration Table of Dubois County into one organization.
“Through all of the years that ALASI has been active, the organization has gained a lot of trust and support from the Latino community members,” Evelyn Rivas, President of ALASI, said. “We have received feedback for years regarding the need for a place where our community can easily access resources.”
Now, with a resolute commitment to empowering the community, the center aims to bridge gaps in vital services such as ESL classes, medical care, housing resources, and immigration guidance.
The new center is located in the same location as the former Guadalupe Center — a resource center for the Latino community operated by Evansville Catholic Diocese. This is a benefit because “Many of our Latino community members are already familiar with the building,” said Rivas.
According to the organizations involved, this “monumental achievement” has been made possible through the unwavering support of donors who have recognized the importance of fostering inclusivity and promoting community well-being.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the founding donors: German American Bank, OFS, Menke Foundation, Meyer Distributing/Meyer Logistics, Farbest Foods, Memorial Hospital, Kimball International, Kimball Electronics Jasper, Old National Bank, and Springs Valley Bank & Trust. Their generosity and dedication have paved the way for this transformative endeavor,” the group said in a press release.
Huntingburg Mayor Steve Schwinghammer shared his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking initiative. “The ALASI Resource Center represents a vital stride toward creating a more integrated and harmonious community,” he said. “By providing a hub where essential services are easily accessible, we are nurturing an environment of support and growth for all residents.”
Rivas also expressed her gratitude to the community and donors supporting the initiative.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey to empower and uplift the Latino community,” she said. “The ALASI Resource Center will serve as a haven of assistance and guidance, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder access to fundamental resources. We are thrilled to embark on this transformative mission.”
The event will commence at 1:30 p.m. with an address from ALASI President Evelyn Rivas. Mayor Schwinghamer and Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide will attend to read proclamations for Hispanic Heritage Month. Following the remarks, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the new Resource Center during an open house, further immersing themselves in the center’s mission and vision.
In line with its commitment to fostering community development and engagement, the ALASI Resource Center will soon start the search for an Executive Director of Community Development and Engagement. This pivotal role will be instrumental in connecting visitors with off-site resource providers, enhancing the impact and effectiveness of the center’s services.
