Nannetta “Nan” Niehaus, age 94, of Stendal and Evansville, passed away at 4:25 p.m., Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville.

She was born February 9, 1918 in Stendal, Indiana to William and Oseta (Meyerholtz) Klusmeier. Nan worked in Evansville during World War II as a timekeeper and payroll clerk at the old Seeger Sunbeam Company.

On July 1, 1945 Nannetta was united in marriage to Smith Niehaus in Stendal, Indiana when he returned from the war in Europe. They lived in Holland for two years before her husband rejoined the Army. Nan liked the Army life and enjoyed the travel, especially in Germany and Western Europe. They lived in many locations during her husband’s Army career of 24 years. In 1965 they returned to Stendal, built a home, and lived there for 41 years before moving to the Holiday Retirement Village in Evansville 6 years ago.

Nan was a life-long member of the Lutheran church and was active in various activities at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal, including quilting and needlework. She was the Stendal correspondent for three newspapers in Pike and Dubois Counties for many years. Nan was an excellent cook and also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors – gardening and growing flowers.

Nannetta was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by: three brothers – Herbert, Victor and Noble Klusmeier; and two sisters – Oseta Hall and Mergo Satkamp. (Editors: “Oseta” & “Mergo” are spelled correctly.)

She is survived by:

Her husband of 67 years, Smith Niehaus – Evansville, IN

Two sister-in-laws,

Dorothy Klusmeier and Rozella Niehaus,

by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nephews.

Funeral services for Nannetta “Nan” Niehaus will be held at 2:00 p.m., E.D.T., on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Stendal. Pastor Ed Wicks will officiate the services.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 12:00-2:00 p.m., E.D.T., Monday, the day of the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal, Indiana.
