Mundy announces Jasper mayoral candidacy
Jasper City Council President Philip Mundy has announced his intention to seek the office of mayor following the resignation of Mayor Dean Vonderheide, who plans to step down on March 31, 2026.
Mundy has served on the Jasper City Council for seven years, originally filling the council seat vacated by Vonderheide when he was appointed mayor. Mundy was then elected to the council in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. He currently serves as City Council President, a role he has held since 2024.
“It has been an honor to serve our city alongside Mayor Vonderheide,” Mundy said. “It truly is a privilege to work with a council whose members are so dedicated to the continued success of Jasper.”
Mundy said he feels prepared to take on the responsibilities of mayor. “Over the past seven years on the council, including the last two as president, I’ve gained valuable experience through seven budget cycles and countless meetings with department heads and city officials,” he said. “Jasper has many exciting projects and opportunities ahead, and I feel ready to lead during this next chapter.”
Mundy is a longtime downtown business owner and recently retired from Jasper Engines & Transmissions, where he served as a lean manufacturing instructor. He is actively involved in the community, serving on the Jasper Redevelopment Commission, Dubois County CASA, and as a volunteer driver for Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Diocese of Evansville Neighbor to Neighbor program, and Heart of Jasper Volunteer.
In addition, Mundy is involved with St. Joseph Church, serving on the Building and Grounds Committee, the Picnic Committee, and as fundraiser chair for the Men’s Club. He is also a church usher. Mundy referees youth basketball and has helped organize the Strassenfest Bike Ride for more than 25 years. An avid cyclist, he enjoys Jasper’s parks and trail system.
“When asked why I want to run for mayor, my answer is simple,” Mundy said. “It’s not about me. It’s about preserving and enhancing the quality of life we enjoy in Jasper – supporting our families, attracting new residents, encouraging job and manufacturing growth, promoting affordable housing people can take pride in, and continuing to improve our local infrastructure.”
The caucus of Republican Precinct Committeemembers will convene on Friday, January 16, 2026, to select a candidate to finish Mayor Vonderheide’s term.
