Mildred Sheila Woodward Kavanaugh, age 96, of Jasper, Indiana passed away at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper after a brief illness.

Mildred was born on December 1, 1917, in Birdseye, Indiana to William Robert and Mary Pearl (Newton) Woodward. She married Paul Michael Kavanaugh on November 27, 1939, in Jasper, Indiana. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1989.

She was a homemaker and member of the Jasper High School class of 1935, the Bainbridge Home Economics Club, Grandmothers Club, Jasper Daughters of Isabella, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, St. Ann’s Society of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, and was an active participant and senior member of The Singing Seniors.

Mildred was known for her lightning sharp wit. She enjoyed working the daily crossword puzzles in ink — which she did every morning.

She is survived by three daughters, Beatrice Susan Gabbert, of Jasper, Marlene Claire Deters, and her husband, Ken, of Robinson, Ill., and Margaret Anne Meyer, and her husband, Michael, of Huntingburg; six sons, Paul Patrick Kavanaugh, and his wife, Sally, Surprise, Az., William Raymond Kavanaugh, and his wife, Paula, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., David Wayne Kavanaugh, of Chicago, Ill., Timothy Edward Kavanaugh, and his wife, Ann, of Kansas City, Mo., Michael John Kavanaugh, of Birdseye, and Gregory Brian Kavanaugh, and his wife, Janice, of Glencoe, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren

Preceding Mildred in death besides her husband are two brothers, Kyle and Sylvan Woodward and three half-sisters, Connie Byrd, Blanche Woodward, and Kathleen Delaney.

Funeral services for Mildred Sheila Woodward Kavanaugh will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday (March 11, 2014) at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Jasper D of I and St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
