Mildred “Millie” D. Schum, 89, Jasper, passed away at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.

Millie was born in Orange County, Indiana, on August 2, 1927 to Waldo and Hazel (Weaver) Crowder. She married Robert Neukam on August 6, 1944, and he preceded her in death on November 22, 1969. She then married John Schum in December 8, 1973, and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1988.

Millie retired from Walmart in 1990 and for the past 25 years has acted as manager and tour guide of Dr. Ted’s Musical Marvels. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana.

She was a past member of the Ferdinand Daughters of Isabella, and she belonged to the Women of the Moose Chapter #648.

She was a Teddy bear collector and maker of sock monkeys.

She is survived by six daughters, Margaret Melton and her husband Joe of Jasper, Delphine Neukam of Indianapolis, Linda Garnas and her husband Donald of Roseville, Cali., Donna Powell and her husband Kenny of Hillham, Ind., Judy Wagner of Indianapolis and Cathy Leistner and her husband Jim of Dubois; one son, Nicholas Neukam of Muncie; one stepdaughter, Mary Kay Waflart and her husband Ted of Huntingburg; one stepson, David Schum and his wife Ceil of Cedarburg, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; one stepbrother, Mark Schuyler of Kendallville, Ind.; extended family, Gary and Linda Rasche of Jasper, Ken and Jan Rasche of Jasper and Bill and Becky Rasche of Huntingburg.

Preceding her in death are a sister, Frieda Crowder, two stepmothers, Gladys and Annabell Crowder, and her companion, Sylvester B. Rasche.

Funeral services for Mildred “Millie” D. Schum will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, with burial to follow at a later date.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time at the church on Thursday.
