Melvin W. Leistner, 83, Dubois, passed away at 3:38 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper.

Melvin was born in Dubois, Indiana, on March 14, 1933 to Conrad J. and Caroline (Braun) Leistner. He married Margaret Ann Sendelweck on April 24, 1956 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville, Indiana.

He was a 1951 graduate of Dubois High School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, from 1953-1955, in the 3rd Armored Tank Division. He was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Melvin was owner/operator of Melvin Leistner Trucking from 1979-2001. After retirement he ran a starter and alternator repair service from home.

He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Dubois, and he was chairman of Columbia Township Advisory Board for 30 years, from 1986-2016.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends, and was an avid I.U. Basketball and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Leistner of Dubois; two daughters, Gail Leistner of Jasper and Karen Lechner and her husband Tim of Jasper; one son, Keith Leistner and his wife Chrisy of Whiteland, Ind.; four grandchildren, Eric Lechner, Kaitlyn Leistner, Jacob and Joseph Leistner; one great-granddaughter, Kylie Fleck; one sister-in-law, Marie Leistner of Evansville.

Preceding him in death are one sister, Patricia Leistner and one brother, Gerald Leistner.

Funeral services for Melvin W. Leistner will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Dubois, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Pastor John Sterrett will officiate.

Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. service time at the church on Wednesday.
