Meeting to discuss local push for Dubois County bypass

State Rep. Mike Braun, R-Jasper, has called a meeting with local city, town and county representatives to talk about getting the U.S. 231 bypass project back on the Indiana Department of Transportation’s list of projects.

The meeting is today in the Pfaffenweiler Room of Jasper City Hall, 610 Main St., at 12:30 p.m.

The Dubois County Commissioners and Council, Huntingburg Common Council and Mayor Denny Spinner, and Jasper Common Council and Mayor Terry Seitz have been invited to attend. Braun says businesses and residents interested in the discussion are also welcome to attend.

Braun plans on discussing local initiatives that may be needed to move the project forward.

The Indiana Department of Transportation had plans to complete a U.S. 231 bypass through the county in the early 2000s. Once the Spencer County portion was finished, the bypass through Dubois County was removed from the future projects list and no work has been completed since.

Since 2011, a local group of businesses, community leaders and residents has been pushing for the creation of a 37-mile bypass — the Midstate Corridor — through the county that would connect the improved portion of U.S. 231 at the edge of the county to I-69 in Washington.
