Medical condition causes nearly head-on collision
A 52-year-old Velpen man told deputies he either blacked out or had a seizure before his vehicle crossed the center line and nearly struck an oncoming pickup truck head-on Monday afternoon.
According to deputies, Darrel Kelsey of E. Walnut St., was eastbound on State Road 56 at about 5:32 p.m. in a 2000 Chevrolet passenger car when he had the medical condition and crossed the center line. William Russell, 58, of E. County Road 700S, Washington, was westbound in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup. Kelsey’s car struck Russell’s pickup.
Both drivers complained of pain but both refused medical attention.
The two vehicles were believed to be a total loss.
Ireland Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and tow trucks from Sternberg’s and Uebelhor and Sons assisted at the scene.
