Mary Moy Johnson, 91, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 7:55 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, Indiana.

Mary was born on August 2, 1923 in Augusta, Georgia to Leong and Dessie Woo. She had two marriages. Her first marriage was to Vincent Wong Moy. He preceded her in death in 1969. Her second marriage was to Buell Johnson. He preceded her in death in 2003.

Mary was the second of eight children and a child of immigrants from Southern China who were industrious grocery store owners in Augusta, Georgia. Inheriting a strong work ethic, she has been the owner of a number of Chinese restaurants with her first husband Vincent Wong Moy. Following his death, she moved from Madison, Indiana to Jasper, Indiana to assist her daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and John Semersheim, to open the first Chinese restaurant in Dubois County, Ming Tree. Even after her “retirement” she worked for ten years for Schneider’s Shoe Store earning top sales person for SAS Shoes before marrying her second husband, Buell Johnson, who preceded her in death.

A woman of great faith, Mary enjoyed sharing her Christian faith with others and inviting them to her home church, Central Christian Church of Huntingburg. She also enjoyed a very active social life dancing with other young singles and living life to its fullest.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary VanHoy of Indianapolis, Miriam Sermersheim and her husband John Michael Sermersheim, of Bloomington, and Rebecca Falkenberg and her husband Randy, of Atlanta; two sons, Paul Wong of Milwaukee, Wis. and Thomas Moy of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Quan of Houston, Texas and Daisy Brazzeal 0f Atlanta, Georgia.

Preceding her in death besides her two husbands was one son, James Moy.

A Celebration of Life Service for Mary Moy Johnson will be held at noon on Monday, August 11, 2014, at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, IN. Pastor Craig Taylor will officiate.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until Noon before services on August 11, 2014 at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, IN.
