Mary Lou Schmitt, 82, of Ireland, passed away at 5:57 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2016, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper.
Mary Lou was born in Jasper, Indiana on October 30, 1933, to John and Lucille (Schuetter) Schulte. She married Frank E. Schmitt on February 18, 1954, in Kundek Hall of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.
Mary Lou worked for 24 years as one of the first secretaries for Alvin Ruxer at Jasper Engine Exchange. After a brief time away to start a family, she then worked at Uebelhor and Sons for five years. After her time there, she worked for over 40 years as a secretary/bookkepper for Mrs. Ruxer and Bob Ruxer at Ruxer Horse Farms.
She was a member of the Jasper High School class of 1951, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the St. Ann’s Society, and the Jasper D of I.
She enjoyed doing word search puzzles and going on walks. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially her great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Schmitt of Ireland; three sons, Dean Schmitt and his wife Jill of Jasper, Wayne Schmitt and his wife Geri of Ireland and Greg Schmitt and his wife Kathy of Ireland; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Ackerman and her husband of Vince of Jasper; one brother, Charles Schulte and his wife Clara Mae of Jasper; two stepsisters, Marlene Schmitt and her husband Gary of Ireland and Carol “Susie” Sander of Jasper; one sister-in-law, Mary Catherine Schulte of Jasper.
Preceding her in death are two brothers, Bernie and John Schulte, a step-sister, Diane Phillips; and two in-laws, Phyllis Schulte, and Dave Phillips.
Funeral services for Mary Lou Schmitt will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016, the 62nd wedding anniversary of Frank and Mary Lou, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. service time at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.
