Marlene B. Schmitt, 81, Ireland

Marlene B. Schmitt, 81, of Ireland, passed away at 4:34 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper, Indiana, surrounded by family.

Marlene was born in Jasper on February 1, 1945, to Lawrence and Lucille (Schuetter) Jahn. 

She married the love of her life, Gerard “Gary” M. Schmitt on June 17, 1967 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana. He preceded her in death on May 28, 2019, after 51 years of marriage.  

She was a 1963 graduate of Jasper High School.

Marlene was a homemaker and also worked as a waitress at the Chicken Place in Ireland, and retired as a 1st-grade teacher’s aide at Ireland Elementary.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its St. Anne’s Society, and of the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella.  

She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, hosting family holidays, listening to country music and attending country music shows, and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Kendra (Max) Renner of Boone Township; four sons, Shawn (Marissa) Schmitt of Ireland, Carey (Kim) Schmitt of Ireland, Brad Schmitt of Ireland, and Chad (Ashley) Schmitt of Evansville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way; two sisters, Frances Ackerman of Jasper, and Susie Sander of Jasper.  

Preceding her in death beside her husband were two sisters, Diane Phillips and Mary Lou Schmitt, and three brothers: Bernie Schulte, John Schulte, and Charlie Schulte. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marlene B. Schmitt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Ind., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time at the church on Wednesday.
