Man facing charges related to gun-wielding mailbox invasions and vandalism in Schnellville
A Roachdale, Ind. man was arrested Monday after police received the report of a man with a gun going through mailboxes in Schnellville.
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police responded and located the suspect vehicle and made a traffic stop. During the stop, police located a pellet gun in the vehicle and detected the odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle. Mr. Franklin L Haas, 63, was taken into custody on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, and battery by bodily waste. Mr. Haas is alleged to have spit on a jail officer when they were securing him in a patrol vehicle.
Then, on June 30, 2026, officers were contacted to investigate vandalism to signage at the Schnellville Conservation Club and vandalism to a grave marker in the Schnellville cemetery. Upon further investigation, Mr. Haas was charged with both cemetery mischief and criminal mischief in connection with these incidents.
According to the Dubois County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, today is the last day that the charge of cemetery mischief will ever exist in Indiana. On July 1, the crime of cemetery mischief was rolled into a new crime known as criminal vandalism. Mr. Haas may be the last person in Indiana to ever be charged with cemetery mischief, said the prosecuting attorney’s office in a Facebook post.
Mr. Haas appeared before Judge Anthony Quinn on June 30 in Dubois Superior Court. Judge Quinn set his cash bond at $1,000. Should Mr. Haas post that bond, he will be placed on enhanced pre-trial monitoring with the condition that he shall comply with all mental health recommendations.
