Man arrested after striking a railroad crossing guard

Huntingburg — Huntingburg police arrested Yeison Valdes Fonseca, 25, of Erin Court, Huntingburg, after he crashed into a railroad crossing arm pole.

Police were dispatched to the railroad crossing on County Road 400W near Farbest Foods at about 8:32 p.m. for the accident. When they arrived, they found Fonseca standing next to a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic that was backed into one of the crossing arm poles near the railroad crossing.

The crossing arm was activated and repeatedly going up and down.

Fonseca told police that he was the driver of the car and that he did not drive in the United States very much. Officers determined Fonseca had never been licensed in the United States and charged him with operating while never licensed. He was booked into the Dubois County Security Center.

The rear driver’s side bumper of the Chevrolet was smashed into the pole. The tail lens, bumper and trunk hood were damaged. Police estimated the damages to the car were about $2,000.

Preliminary damages to the pole were estimated at about $50.
