M. Louise Burns, 97, of Jasper, Indiana passed away at 10:08 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, Indiana.

Louise was born in Pike County, Indiana on February 13, 1917 to Thad and Blanche (Burch) Potter. She married Brady Burns on February 8, 1941 in Washington, Indiana. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1987.

Louise was an elementary school teacher for 46 years. Twenty-eight years were spent teaching at Winslow Elementary and twelve years were spent teaching at Elberfeld Elementary.

She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. She started the choir and was the first choir director at the church, and also taught Sunday school for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Indiana Teachers’ Association.

She thoroughly enjoyed teaching, but also loved playing the piano and singing, flowers, and was very involved in her family.

She is survived by one son, Carl Burns, and his wife Julie, of Jasper; three grandchildren, Kent Burns, and his wife Patti, of Carmel,
Andrea Jones, and her husband, Aaron, of Shoals, and Evan Burns of Indianapolis; seven great-grandchildren, Haley, Max, and Abby Burns, and Ethan, Austin, Jaden and Ava Jones; three caregivers, Michelle Luegers, Nancy Blessinger and Mary Rose Knepp.

Preceding her in death are one sister, Lois Jeanne Richeson, and three brothers, Amos, Preston, and Raymond Potter.

Funeral services for Louise Burns will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City, Indiana. Pastor Paul Alvey will officiate.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Jasper and one hour before services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
