Lillian B. (maiden name: Terry) Gable, age 96, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away at 6:40 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2011 at The Waters of Huntingburg.
She was born October 31, 1915 in Pope County, Illinois to Hal and Suda (Palmer) Terry. After the loss of her mother at the age of 7, she was reared by her father and step-mother, Anna (Palmer) Terry. Three half-sisters resulted from this union. Lillian grew up knowing hard work on the family farm and grew up caring for her three younger siblings. On April 30, 1935, twenty year old Lillian married Russell A. Gable, also from Pope County. She continued to live on the farm and began her own family of two daughters. In 1947, when Russell became associated with timber buying, the family relocated to Huntingburg, Indiana.
Lillian was hardworking, a loving and devoted wife and mother who required little, and lived simply. Having lived through the Great Depression and World War II, she and Russell knew well the value of a dollar and never lived beyond their means. Lillian expressed many times about all the changes that had accrued in her lifetime. Up until she broke her hip in 2009, she resided on Jackson Street in Huntingburg and was still going on her walks, working crossword puzzles, taking short trips, and visiting with family and friends. Lillian was a member of the Huntingburg United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Russell A. Gable, who died on August 26, 1975; one daughter who died at birth, Carolyn Sue Gable; and one half-sister, Janet Jackson.
