Letter to the Editor: Farina good candidate for Ferdinand

For the first time in many years, the citizens of the lovely town of Ferdinand have a choice for one of the seats on the town council. Shall we continue with the status quo which has made some decisions that have upset and angered many of us, or shall we move in a different direction with a new face?

I wish to submit to you that new face – Don Farina, Sr.

Don may be a newcomer to politics, but he is not new to Ferdinand. For over thirty years, Don has been a resident of this fine community. He is a certified advanced weather spotter, volunteers to help with the elderly, and serves as an usher at St. Ferdinand Church. He is a member of the American Legion and the St. Meinrad K of C.

Don worked in the construction industry for 35 years. He has also been a law enforcement officer and advanced EMT.

While many of us have kept quiet, and while many more of us have not taken the time to attend town board meetings, Don faithfully attends every meeting. He has been a tireless advocate for the citizens of this community in several matters that have come before the board.

In talking with Don for the first time a few weeks ago, I was immediately impressed with how much he loves and cares about Ferdinand. This man truly has our best interests in mind as he seeks public office as a member of the town council. He educates himself on local issues, seeks input from local and state officials as he deems appropriate, and presents his independent findings to the town council on several occasions. Sidewalks, flooding, housing, jobs, infrastructure, the phosphorous issue…these and many more concerns are Don’s concerns as well.

Not only do we have sidewalks in need of repair, we also need new sidewalks in areas that currently do not have them. During certain times of the year, our Forest Park cross country team makes practice runs along Vienna Drive and on 23rd Street (Forest Road) where there are no sidewalks. This creates a safety hazard for our children who are forced to share the streets with vehicular traffic. Don realizes how important this need is and will work to accomplish it.

Excessive water runoff from rain is causing flooding in some parts of town. Don is willing to work with the state of Indiana in resolving this issue in a rapid and cost-effective manner.

Don has stated that if elected, he will be available at Ferdinand Town Hall to meet with constituents eight hours a day, five days a week. In other words, he wants to be a full-time councilman, devoting all of his time to serving the citizens of Ferdinand.

Let us not rush to keep someone in office who has had more than his share of time. Let us consider the issues. Let us consider the candidates. Take a few minutes and read about the issues and Don’s proposed solutions on his Facebook page.

And after you have taken the time to educate yourself on the issues and the man, I urge you to vote for Don Farina, Sr. for the Ferdinand Town Council.
