Letter to the Editor: Agricultural event hits 25 year mark

We are surrounded every day by the impact of agriculture in our lives, yet so many individuals do not understand or appreciate the importance of agriculture in their daily lives. Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis.

This year will mark the 25th year Purdue Extension-Dubois County will invite nearly 600 students and teachers from elementary schools to our Dubois County Fairgrounds to learn more about the food and agriculture connection. We know youth are making the connection and becoming agri-cultured through our efforts.

After the event last year a teacher shared: “You have built an awareness of what farm life is really like. Particularly, students are always impressed by the by-products, which they have not really thought about. So, one day after lunch, I am refreshing my lipstick. The students came back from lunch and said, ‘Yew!!! You are putting pig on your lips.’”

Over 50 volunteers will be on hand Tuesday, May 14, to show and explain to youth where their food comes from and how agriculture impacts their lives each and every day. The hands on minds on learning experience is supported by our county schools, Farm Bureau, 4-H Council, Extension Homemakers, 4-H Junior Leader organization, the Dubois County Cattleman Association and Purdue Extension –Dubois County.

The Purdue Extension-Dubois County Staff is grateful for our volunteers’ willingness to help with this program. The day would be impossible without all the terrific people who choose to educate youth about the importance of agriculture. We all know that agriculture touches all our lives in many ways each and every day and we appreciate everyone’s efforts to help make this day a success.
