Letter: If I owned a large fleet of trucks

If I owned a large fleet of trucks, I would certainly be interested in a better way to travel in and out of Dubois County. I might even fund a study to see what corridor options might be available and how my company could benefit from it.

But when I started seeing the results of the study, the impacts it would have on my fellow man, the losses they would suffer, the tears in their eyes over losing their homes and generational farms, I would stop the project.

I would think about how very successful I already am… and with God in my heart, I would want my fellow man to be successful also. I do not want to crush my neighbors in order to help myself, this is not God’s way.

I would contact the other supporters of the project and say “we cannot do this to our brothers and sisters in Dubois County”. “It would be a mistake to move this forward as it causes too much loss and heartbreak”. “Let’s simply make some upgrades to 231”.

Sure, this means that my drivers will have to shift a few more gears to get out of this area, but that is a small price to pay in order to not ruin my neighbors’ lives. If future generations determine that farming isn’t important anymore, then let them decide for themselves to pave over it. As for myself, I cannot be the person to cause this amount of loss. It is not God’s way.
