Letter: Hoosier Hysteria and the Mid-States Corridor

First, as we enter the season of Hoosier Hysteria and March Madness, I wish to congratulate all the basketball teams in the state for their dedication and loyalty, and the student bodies’ support of each and every school at every grade level.

Good luck in the tournaments!

Second, another madness that all Hoosiers of our great state are facing is called the Mid-States Corridor Project. At a time when most roads and bridges across the state are in poor or failing condition, INDOT has recently announced that more than 400 maintenance and improvement projects have been delayed, postponed, or cancelled across the state!

The funding from the much-needed maintenance projects, I suspect under orders from the governor, has or will be diverted to the Mid-States Corridor, a 54-mile four-lane new terrain highway in the southern Indiana counties of Dubois, Martin, and Daviess.

INDOT has projected the minimum cost at $46 million per mile, excluding right-of-way acquisition costs and legal fees. Every other county in the state will feel the financial effect, and crater-sized potholes will result from this maddening project for decades to come.

Let’s get our teams together, contact your Senators and Representatives, ask them to stop all funding for the Mid-States Corridor madness, and make repairs to our existing crumbling roads.

Hoosier Hysteria is a province of our gymnasiums. Not the Governor’s mansion or INDOT.
