Leroy Joseph Schroeder, 81, Jasper, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at home.

Leroy was born in Jasper on July 28, 1935 to Joseph and Esther (Fischer) Schroeder. He married Bernetta Jahn on October 25, 1956, in St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Leroy retired as a custodian of 10th Street School. He started the Jasper Men’s Basketball League. He was a basketball referee and baseball umpire. In 1977, Leroy was appointed to the Jasper City Council where he served as councilman for the 5th precinct for over 18 years. He was awarded the “Key to the City” from Mayor William Schmitt in 1995.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Society. He was a Fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed attending mass, playing cards, watching his children and grandchildren’s golf, baseball, softball, cheerleading, swimming, soccer, and tennis events. He also enjoyed going to the family farm and Beaver Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Bernetta Schroeder of Jasper; three daughters; Lisa Gehlhausen and husband Gary of Jasper, Mary Neuhoff and husband Dave of Jasper and Kathy Buschkoetter and husband Brent of Jasper; five sons, John Schroeder and wife Patty of Jasper, Phil Schroeder of Jasper, Glen Schroeder of Jasper, Jeff Schroeder and wife Lori of Lebanon and Andy Schroeder and wife Myra of Jasper; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Kate Labhart and husband Neil of Jasper, Rose Ann Sanders and husband Harold of Reelsville, Ind., Carolyn Auffart of Ferdinand, Linda Lambert and husband Dave of Evansville and Christine Prior of Huntingburg; two brothers, James Schroeder and wife Donna of Jasper and Charles Schroeder and wife Ruth of Greencastle; sister-in-law; Sue Schroeder of Ireland; brother-in-law; Bruce Rosbottom of Santa Claus.

Preceding him in death was one son, Stephen Schroeder; one brother, Ronald Schroeder; three sisters, Norma Jean Mehringer, Becky Schroeder and Cynthia Rosbottom; and brothers-in-law, Tom Mehringer and James Auffart.

Funeral services for Leroy Schroeder will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment to follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.

Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until the 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2016, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel In Jasper.
