Leona M. Schlachter, 89, Celestine

Leona M. Schlachter, 89, of Celestine, passed away at 2:12 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019, in St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. 

She was born on November 18, 1929, in Celestine to Charles and Anna (Mathies) Hoffman. She married Jerome J. Schlachter on October 27, 1949 in St. Celestine Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1988. 

Leona was a member of St. Isadore Parish – St. Celestine Church and the St. Anne Society. She worked at the Celestine Community Club for 30 years and enjoyed making quilts.

She is survived by four daughters, Linda Mehringer (Fred), Susie Looney, Sharon Knies (Donald), and Marilyn Hochgesang (Charles), all of Jasper; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frieda Berg of Ferdinand and Jenny Elkins of Celestine; one brother, Alfred Hoffman (Ann) of Ferdinand.

Preceding her in death is one sister who died in infancy. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019, in St. Celestine Catholic Church with burial to follow in St. Celestine Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time at St. Celestine Catholic Church. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Celestine Fire Department, Celestine Knight of Columbus or to a favorite charity.
