Leon Frederick Wellemeyer, 92

, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Friday, August 29, 2014 at The Waters of Huntingburg nursing center in Huntingburg.
Leon was born in Holland, Indiana, on September 11, 1921 to Edward and Naomi (Weitkamp) Wellemeyer. He graduated from Holland High School and the Indiana School of Mortuary Science. He married Carolyn Lukemeyer in 1942 in Brooklyn, New York.
Leon was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 2nd Marine Division on Saipan, Okinawa, and Japan. He worked with the Western-Southern Insurance Company for 30 years as an agent and manager. After retirement, he worked for the Holland National Bank and German American Bank for over 25 years. Leon belonged to the Huntingburg United Methodist Church, where he served in many different capacities; was a member and past president of the Huntingburg Kiwanis Club for over 50 years; and served on the board of the Huntingburg Library for 16 years. He was also a member of the Huntingburg Country Club, American Legion, V.F.W., Y.M.I. Club, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine.
Leon was a man who enjoyed all sports and enjoyed working on his pecan farm. He had a great love for his friends, his church, his town, his family, and his wife – Carolyn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Wellemeyer and sister, Betty French.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Carolyn Wellemeyer of Huntingburg; two sons and two daughter-in-laws,
Mike (Lynda) Wellemeyer of Prospect, Ky. and John (Elaine) Wellemeyer of Evansville; one daughter and son-in-law, Marcia (Ralph) Scales of Jeffersonville, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Jeff, Todd, Kyle, Jennifer, Juli, Greg and Jill; and 17 great grandchildren.
Memorial services for Leon Wellemeyer will be held at 2:00 p.m., EST on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial of his cremains to follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg. Pastor Lee Campbell will officiate at the service. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, the day of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Huntingburg United Methodist Church or the Huntingburg Stellar Project.
The family would like to thank all those who helped as Leon battled the disease of depression. The support from the Waters of Huntingburg, various medical personnel, and his friends was needed and truly appreciated.
