Lemmons Church Triennial event honors country's foundation

*Emma Mundy led the Jasper High School Choir in a performance of several patriotic songs during the special event held on Sunday.*

The Triennial Event between the Lemmons Church and the Ireland Historical Society was held on Sunday afternoon, September 21.

The event, attended by approximately 80 people, featured a performance by the Jasper High School Choir and its director, Emma Mundy. The performance commemorated the 250th anniversary of the US Army and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. To honor each anniversary, the choir sang: “God Bless America”, “I Lift My Lamp”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “America The Beautiful”, and “Thank You Soldiers”.

The Seven Revolutionary War Veterans buried in Dubois County were also honored. They are Richard Stillwell, Lewis Powers, John Hills, James Harbinson, William Anderson, Hugh Rodman, Sr. and Luther Adams. George Washington was honored as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. The Betsy Ross Flag was blowing in the wind outside during the event. Any veterans attending were also recognized.

The restoration of Lemmons Church was also noted. The historic church was slated for demolition due to its deteriorating condition, and all its contents were sold in 1982. However, a restoration committee was formed and raised funds to successfully restore the church. During the process, many items that were sold were donated back to support the efforts. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1991.
