Lawrence E. “Larry” Thewes, 81, of Celestine, passed away at 4:32 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at home surrounded by family.

Larry was born in Huntingburg on January 20, 1945, to Alois and Martina (Werner) Thewes.
He married Marilyn Persohn on July 11, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schnellville, Indiana.
He was a farmer and also worked as a Union Carpenter, retiring after over 50 years. He was also president and an appraiser for Celestine Mutual Fire Insurance.
He was a member of St. Celestine Catholic Church – St. Isidore Parish, Celestine Community Club, the Celestine Park, and the Carpenter’s Union 224.
Larry enjoyed mushroom hunting, playing cards and horseshoes, watching his favorite T.V. shows, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Thewes of Celestine; three children, Michelle (Dean) Keller of Dubois, Paul (Susie) Thewes of Celestine, and Duane (Courtney) Thewes of Celestine; one daughter-in-law, Gail Thewes of Celestine; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Janice (Dave) Knies of Jasper, Mary (Steve) Rohleder of Bretzville, Karen (Tony) Mehringer of Schnellville, Kathy (Tony) Vogler of Jasper, and Cheryl (Kevin) Haas of Jasper; five brothers, Jim (Connie) Thewes of Ireland, Leon (Donna) Thewes of St. Anthony, Allen Thewes of Celestine, Randy (Connie) Thewes of Celestine, and Kevin Thewes of Celestine; one brother-in-law, Tom Fickas Sr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are one son, Keith Thewes; one daughter, Beverly Harris; one grandson, Austin Seng; one great-grandson, Kamdyn Seng; one sister, Doris Fickas; and one brother, Jerry Thewes.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence E. “Larry” Thewes will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.
