LaVerne A. Meyer, 84, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 21, 2014, at The Waters of Huntingburg nursing center in Huntingburg.
She was born September 16, 1929 in Jasper, Indiana, to Albert and Catherine (Frohlich) Schmitt.
She married James E. Meyer on July 18, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. Mrs. Meyer was a full-time Registered Nurse at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper for 42 years. After retiring from the hospital, she continued to provide nursing care to homebound patients for an additional 18 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg, St. Mary’s Ladies Sodality, the Huntingburg V.F.W. Post #2366 Auxiliary, and the Ferdinand American Legion Post #124 Auxiliary.
Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by: one brother, David Schmitt; and two sisters, Josephine Jacob and Mary Bresser.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Meyer of Huntingburg; 10 children with seven sons and three daughters, Ed (wife: Donna) Meyer of Huntingburg, Pat (wife: Barb) Meyer of Huntingburg, Bob (wife: Eileen) Meyer of Huntingburg, Mary Jo (husband: Jake) Fischer of Huntingburg, Cathy (husband: Rich) Tretter of Huntingburg, Art Meyer of Brownsburg, Ind., Paul Meyer of Brownsburg, Ind., Joe (wife: Lori) Meyer of Shawnee, Kansas, Randy (wife: Mary) Meyer of Spring Hill, Kansas, and Nancy Rahman of Chesterfield, Miss.; three brothers, Frank Schmitt of Huntingburg, Ray Schmitt of Jasper, and Vincent Schmitt of Jasper; one sister, Gloria Jean Ruhe of Brazil, Ind.; 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Laverne A. Meyer will be held at 10:00 a.m., EST on Monday, August 25, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Huntingburg.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-7:00 p.m., on Sunday. A St. Mary’s Parish and Ladies Sodality rosary prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday afternoon; and a combined V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliary memorial service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m., Sunday evening, at the funeral home.
