Komen Evansville Tri-State Affiliate awards over $516,800 for local programs

EVANSVILLE, IN – The Evansville Tri-State Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® awarded nineteen grants today totaling $516,810. The nineteen grants were made possible by net proceeds raised primarily from the 2012 Komen Evansville Tri-State Race for the Cure®, Bowl for the Cure® events in Evansville, Owensboro and Henderson and other supporting fundraisers, individual and corporate donations.

The grant recipient programs include breast health education, screening mammograms, diagnostic services and treatment initiatives. (A complete list of grant recipients is attached.) Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Evansville Tri-State Affiliate is one of 120 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

According to Sheila Seiler, Executive Director of the Evansville Tri-State Affiliate, “Since our first Race for the Cure® in 1998, over $6.7 million has been funded locally and over 26,000 women and men here in our community have received life-saving treatment, mammograms or diagnostic services. Without the services we provide, thousands of people would not receive the vital breast health care they need.”

Komen and its Affiliates are known globally for their dedication to filling existing gaps in breast health and breast cancer needs. To make sure they are addressing needs that no one else is meeting in their own service areas, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with Komen’s promise to end breast cancer forever. “One could consider us the tri-states only full-service breast health provider. We provide for education programs, mammograms, diagnostic services, treatment and breast cancer support programs.” says Sheila Seiler. “Without our help, thousands of women each year would go without their annual mammogram, and this could lead to higher fatality rates from breast cancer. We strive to get every eligible woman in for an annual mammogram, find the cancer early if it’s there and treat it while it’s still 98% survivable.”

In addition to the local program awards, the Komen Evansville Tri-State Affiliate has also contributed $150,000 this year to the Komen National Research Grant Program which funds only breast cancer research.

  • Deaconess Hospital Foundation–“Deaconess Breast Health Outreach Program”-$79,457–This program is designed to provide both education and awareness to women about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the availability of financial assistance to have access to screening and diagnostic services. This will in turn increase early detection and decrease mortality. Contact Robynn Working-812-424-1200.
  • Dubois-Pike-Warrick Economic Opportunity Committee, Inc.–“TRI-CAP Breast Cancer Program”-$99,480–The purpose of the program is to help with treatment costs, educate and do extensive case management with underserved, underinsured and/or uninsured women and men who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and are living in the Evansville Tri-State Affiliate area.   • Fairfield Memorial Hospital Association-“Pass on the Promise”-$6,847-This project will provide screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds to patients. It will also provide breast health awareness education. This program serves Edwards, Fairfield, Wayne and White Counties in Illinois and incorporates mobile mammography to greater impact the communities. Contact Robyn Adcock-618-847-8271.
  • The Foundation for Health–“Mammograms for Life”-$51,698-This program will provide screening mammograms and additional diagnostic services, as needed, to low-income women age 40-64 who do not qualify for any other program. Patients in Kentucky may receive services at Breckinridge Diagnostics Center, HealthPark Diagnostics Center, The Springs or Multicare in Madisonville. Contact: Lauren Osowicz 270-688-2350.
  • Good Samaritan Hospital–“Illiana Breast Health Awareness”-$68,911-The project goal is to educate Knox County and surrounding communities on the importance of breast health awareness and to provide financial assistance in obtaining services. The services provided are clinical breast exams, screening and diagnostic mammograms as well as further diagnostic testing as needed. Contact Wendy Reese-812-885-3627.
  • Hamilton Memorial Hospital District-“Caring Hearts, Helping Hands & Saving Lives”-$6,923-This project will make screening mammograms and other diagnostic testing, as needed, available to residents of Hamilton, and White and other surrounding Illinois Counties. It will also provide breast health information and one-on-one education. Contact Kelly Wellen-618-643-2361.
  • Indiana Women In Need–“Survivor Support Program”-$15,000.00-This program will assist women with professional non-medical services while they are in treatment for breast cancer. Services include but are not limited to: babysitting, house cleaning, groceries and transportation. Counties served by this grant are Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick in Indiana. Contact Sue Wynne-317-475-0565.
  • Methodist Hospital–“Mammograms for Western Kentucky”-$21,468-This program will provide screening and diagnostic services to women who reside in Henderson, Union and Webster Counties in Kentucky. Contact Christa Cole-270-831-7931.
  • Montgomery County Health Department-“Breast & Cervical Cancer Program”-$5,203-This project will help provide mammograms for women in the 40-49 age group in Southern Illinois to compliment the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Contact Pam Johnson-217-532-2001.
  • Perry County Memorial Hospital, Tell City, IN – “Our Turn: A Breast Health Program for Women” – $18,570- This program serves under and uninsured women living and/or working in the rural areas of Perry County and Spencer County in Indiana, and Hancock County in Kentucky. Screening mammograms and educational programs will be provided, as well as diagnostic services. Contact Shelly Poole-812-547-0248.
  • Richland Memorial Hospital–“Breast Health Awareness Programs”-$15,522-This program will provide breast health education and encouragement to women to have annual clinical breast exams and mammograms. It will also provide screening for underinsured women and uninsured women who do not qualify for other programs. Additionally a mentor program will be used to match newly diagnosed women with those who have completed treatment for assistance. Counties served are Richland and Edwards, Illinois.   • St. Mary’s Foundation–“Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer”-$99,999- This program provided mammogram screening and diagnostic services, along with information on breast self-awareness to underserved women in Daviess, Gibson, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties. Services are available through mobile screenings as well as through St. Mary’s Breast Center. Contact Dawnelle Neighbors-812-485-5725.
  • Wabash General Hospital – “Breast Cancer Program” – $5,749-This project will reach women who are uninsured or whose insurance deductible is unreachable by providing them with free screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds free of charge. Contact Deb Dillbeck-618-263-6437.

 

Community Pink Ribbon Grants

The Community Pink Ribbon Grant will provide for screening mammograms and breast health education in the smaller or far-reaching communities of our 28-county service area.
