Joseph H. Knust, 90, Jasper

Joseph H. Knust, 90, of Jasper, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, surrounded by family at Serenity Springs at Northwood in Jasper, Ind.

Joe was born in Ferdinand, Ind., on February 18, 1936, to John and Catherine (Burke) Knust. 

He married Charlotte Ludwig on September 6, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Ind. 

He was a graduate of Ferdinand High School.

He was a United States Army veteran, who served in Baumholder, Germany during the Cold War. He originally was in Patton’s Second Armor Division, but was then selected to be a driver after scoring the highest on the German driver’s test.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Knights of Columbus, and Jasper Outdoor Recreation.

Joe grew up on the farm and he and his children spent a lot of time on his family’s farms working and making memories.

In addition, he enjoyed fishing, walking, feeding the squirrels and hummingbirds, woodworking, puzzles, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and attending their events.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte Knust of Jasper; five children, Carol Knust and partner, Chuck Birnbaum, of Mohave Valley, Ariz., Jerry (Julie) Knust of Plainfield, Joni Campbell of Jasper, Mary Jo (Doug) Lorey of Dubois, Phil (Terra) Knust of Stendal; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his twin sister, Mary Krassick, Columbus, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Katherine Knust of Ferdinand; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are one sister Rita Begle and three brothers, Clarence, Leonard, and Ernest Knust.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph H. Knust will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with entombment to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.  The American Legion Post #147 will conduct military graveside rites.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana, and one hour before the services at the church from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dubois County Humane Society, or to a favorite charity.
