Jasper Arts announced the opening of Cincinnati artist JonPaul Smith and the 32nd Annual Juried Arts Exhibit this month. Both will be highlighted on Thursday, September 4, at the First Thursday open house from 5 to 7 p.m. along with Kevin Titzer, whose work incorporating found items is now on display at the Thyen Clark Cultural Center.

Jonpaul Smith: is an artist from Cincinnati, Ohio whose exhibit features larger-than-life paper weavings. Jonpaul considers his process to be one of gathering and disseminating information, rooted in the paper scraps and ephemera of our consumer culture. More information below.

The 32nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition: an annual juried exhibit that included a wide variety of media and techniques: watercolor, oil, acrylic, prints, photography, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and graphite. The exhibit consists of two and three-dimensional work. Only artists from Indiana, its contiguous states or former residents could apply. Juror: Tania Michelle Wineglass from Indianapolis, IN. More information below.

Kevin Titzer: is an Evansville born artist who works with reclaimed and recycled materials. His sculptures range from tabletop figures to room sized installations. He often incorporates open-ended stories and narratives into his art to give the viewer the opportunity to insert their own interpretations.

Jonpaul Smith’s work will be on display from September to October 2025 at the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center.

The solo exhibition titled ‘Everything In It’s Place’ features large paper weavings.

Jonpaul Smith considers his process to be one of gathering and disseminating information, rooted in the paper scraps and ephemera of our consumer culture.

“Through the use of traditional and alternative method printmaking with the combination of other mixed media and found/discarded paper I try to explore open-narrative, visual experiences. I do not want my work to make definitive statements; instead it should highlight these juxtapositions of surface, color, and broken imagery to allow the viewer to create their own visual narrative within my work. My most recent work involves the use of found and discarded paper from our consumer based culture. Which are transformed into a complex, tapestry like construct, made up of hundreds of interwoven strips of discarded consumer packaging, traditional and non-traditional prints, and other paper ephemera. Which similarly make use of (and, in a sense, refine) pop culture imagery”, said Smith.

Born in Logansport, IN, Smith received his M.F.A. and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Cincinnati, D.A.A.P. His B.A. is from Hanover College in Indiana, and he also studied fine arts at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Smith frequently conducts visiting artist seminars, completed a residency and exhibition in Budapest, Hungary, Paducah, Kentucky and was the working artist in residency at Tiger Lily Press in Cincinnati, OH, where he served on their board of directors. Smith has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. His work is included in many prominent private and public collections.

Smith will join us for a Gallery Talk at the First Thursday Opening Reception on Thursday, September 4th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This is a free event open to the public.

Juror – Tania Michelle Wineglass is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and curator based in Indianapolis, with over two decades of experience in the visual arts. Her work—rooted in painting, mixed media, and ceramics—focuses on themes of identity, healing, and cultural heritage, with a strong emphasis on the experiences of Black women. Inspired early in life by Mari Evans’ poem “I Am a Black Woman,” Wineglass creates in powerful series such as Legacy, My Healing Heart, and AfroPunk, the latter incorporating underglazes on ceramic plates to explore Afrofuturist expression. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the country, including at Newfields: Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and Kente Royal Gallery in Harlem. She has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions, created large-scale public murals, and illustrated published books. Wineglass holds a Master of Arts with a focus on ceramics and painting, and brings a thoughtful, community-driven lens to both her art and her curatorial work.
