JHS Students vote to hold graduation at Huntingburg Memorial Gym

The disaster at the gymnasium last week has Jasper High School staff and the school corp scrambling to  relocate events and classes. One event in question has been the JHS Commencement scheduled for May 27.

Due to the destruction of the gym, options for the commencement have been tossed around since late last week. VUJC has offered there facility, the Cabby O’Neill Gym was considered, and Huntingburg Superintendent Terry Enlow called to offer up Memorial Gym as well.

Near the end of the public school board meeting Dr. Vandeventer announced that the decision for the location of the commencement had been placed in the hands of the Jasper High Senior Class.

“Mr. Hacker conducted a senior class meeting this morning and here are the results.” Dr. Vandeventer said. “172 of our seniors voted to have their commencement at the Huntingburg Gym, 52 of them voted for the Cabby Gym, 8 abstained, and I understand that some voted for Disney Land.”

A motion was made to approve moving the commencement to Memorial Gym to which the board voted unanimously in favor.

Lauren Monesmith, the senior class president, then announced their gratitude to Southridge’s offer and then stated, “The weekend after their graduation Memorial will be turned into South Jasper.”

Bob Hacker, JHS Principal stated, “We had over 46oo at last year’s graduation, it was really a decision of who wants to be limited on how many family members can be invited to a graduation.”
