JHS Principal for a Day good for community and kids

Attorney Bill Kaiser, partner at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP, served as Principal for a Day at Jasper High School on Wednesday

As Principal for a Day, Kaiser shadowed JHS Principal Brian Wilson and performed some of his duties such as the giving the morning announcements and attending a gymnasium construction progress meeting.

Kaiser also spoke with senior class and announced a contest he brought especially for the day —students submitted names of other students that they had witnessed performing a random act of kindness. At the end of the day a drawing was held to award one of the submitted names a Christmas stocking full of candy provided by Kaiser.

Kaiser, a 1983 graduate, has had two children graduate from the high school. He said programs like this that involve the community are important since the school population reflects the community as a whole.

According to Principal Wilson, the community leaders that take part in the program gain an insight into the innovative, successful and challenging programs at Jasper High School. In addition, these business and community leaders have the chance to interact with students, serve as role models and provide students with the benefit of their particular areas of expertise.  

Wilson stated the goal is to create better relationships, “Developing relationships with the community is important, bringing a business or community leader into the school can provide another perspective for our students,” he said. “They hear from teachers all day, so how about someone from the community, what’s their perspective?”

This is the first semester for the new Department of Education and Training initiative. Jason Schmitt served as Principal for a Day in November and two new candidates will be announced next semester.
