Jerome Allen “Al” Dotterweich, age 64, of Huntingburg, died at 9:49 a.m., Friday, May 4, 2012 at the V.A. Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was born January 30, 1948 in Huntingburg, Indiana to William and Amy (Kline) Dotterweich. Al graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1966 and the International Broadcasting School in Dayton, Ohio in 1969. He served in the United States Marine Corps in Da Nang, Vietnam from 1967-68 and was the youngest Marine in his division. He worked as a sports writer for the Huntingburg Press; worked at Jasper Cabinet and Whirlpool; started a newspaper in Huntingburg called “The Messenger”; was a radio announcer for both WITZ and WBDC; was a recipient of the Spirit of Southridge Award and also created the Spirit of Southridge Scholarship Endowment Fund; was an extra in the movies “A League of Their Own” and “Hard Rain”; was a member of the Huntingburg Jaycees, V.F.W. Post #2366, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Y.M.I. Club and lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He once ran for mayor of Huntingburg, was a stay-at-home Dad for a time, had several of his newspaper articles included in the Dubois County Museum, was an avid sports fan and was even the winner of a turkey wing eating contest!

He was preceded in death by: three brothers – Raymond, James and Nicholas Dotterweich; and two sisters – Mary Anna Wagner and Wilma Peer.

He is survived by: two daughters – Christine Bial of Lawrence, KS and MaryBess Ann Dotterweich of Decatur, IL ; four sons – Jerome L. of Savannah, GA, Joseph A. of Menasha, WI, John N. of Savannah, GA and Howard Thomas of Ingram, TX; his companion – Connie Ensley of Huntingburg; six brothers – Edmond of St. Louis, MO, Donald of Huntingburg, Daniel of Cincinnati, OH, Alfred of Huntingburg, Billy of Jasper and Wilfred of Dayton, OH; two sisters – Louella Finch of Hammond and Cathy Owens of Rockport; and five grandchildren – Tyler, Duncan, Anna, Emily and Maximilian.

Funeral services for Jerome “Al” Dotterweich will be held at 10:00 a.m., E.D.T., Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Huntingburg. The V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., Monday. A parish rosary followed by a Y.M.I. prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday afternoon, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Spirit of Southridge Scholarship Endowment c/o Dubois County Foundation.
