Jasper woman charged with leaving scene after U-Haul runs into Jasper building

A Jasper woman was cited for leaving the scene of an accident after hitting a pole and a storage building with a U-Haul truck Saturday.

According to authorities, they responded to the report of a U-Haul truck striking a pole and then a storage building at 284 W. 41st St. owned by Jasper Properties LLC at about 6:15 p.m. According to witnesses, the truck ran over the pole and the driver’s side struck the building.

Two juvenile passengers allegedly exited the vehicle and observed the damage before the U-Haul drove away at a high rate of speed, according to the witnesses.

Police determined the truck was at 399 Baden Strasse and made contact with Betty Fields, 41, of an apartment at that address.

Police said Fields admitted to striking the pole and building but didn’t want to report it and fled the scene. She was charged with the Class B misdemeanor.

Damages to the building were estimated to be about $5,000 and about $3,000 for the truck which was damaged along the entire length of the driver’s side.
