Jasper Utilities Manager warns residents to read fine print

Jasper Utilities Manager Bud Hauersperger is recommending citizens read the fine print of an insurance policy being offered for water and sewer lines in the area.

Hauersperger told the Utility Service Board at Monday’s meeting about a letter received by the city that day from a company called HomeServe, PLC (also known as HomeServe USA). The company sells insurance for utility lines (water, sewer and electricity) coming to a person’s home throughout the U.S. and U.K.

He wanted to make sure the citizens know that the City of Jasper has nothing to do with the company and suggested people read the policy before signing up.

“I recommend you read the fine print on the policy,” Hauersperger said. “It says $12,000 of coverage a year or $6000 a year but it only includes $3000 per event or call, at two (calls) per year. So if you had a $6000 break they would only pay $3000.”

Hauersperger went on to read some exclusions listed on the policy; acts of God, thawing of frozen pipes, preexisting conditions, improper maintenance, repair of covered parts, reduction in performance caused by normal wear and tear (at this the board laughed and asked what is covered), and repair when parts are obsolete.

“Again we are not involved or endorsing this type of thing for our customers.” Hauersperger stated.

Board Chairman Wayne Schuetter stated, “I am just trying to think what would be covered.”

Correction: The company was originally named as HomeService LLC. It is actually HomeServe USA or HomeServe PLC.
