Jasper School Corp meeting notes
At the Greater Jasper School Board Meeting Monday night, two people were recognized for achievements in sports categories. First, Terry Gobert has reached the milestone of 606 wins in his career as a baseball coach. Gobert was applauded by the board for his accomplishment and was grateful for their support.
Also, basketball coach John Goebel submitted Dr. Jerrill Vandeventer’s name for Administrator of the Year in the Indiana High School Basketball Coaches Association and Vandeventer was chosen for the award. Vandeventer is in his final weeks as the superintendent of the Jasper School Corporation, but also was a successful basketball coach for many years, earlier in his career. He stated that he was very humbled by the award.
Next, the board heard from Dr. Tracey Lorey on Full Day Kindergarten and the funding that the state has provided to be able to offer it to area parents saying that all parents in the area can take advantage of the program. This is an expansion of a grant to assist in covering the costs of the program. All parents with students at Ireland Elementary and Fifth Street Elementary can now apply for the grant to assist in paying for the program. Parents will still have the option to have there children attend half day Kindergarten.
Assistant Superintendent Mike Hile presented new phone system bids from three different companies. The base bids ranged from a low of $309,353.00 up to $446,427.00. After opening each bid and looking at the amount of detail contained in them, School Board Attorney Art Nordhoff told the board and Hile that each quote would have to be examined to determine which options would be needed and that these options could substantially change the quote amounts. Hile took them under advisement for further study before making a decision.
Hile also brought before the board the need to replace 45 computers and 4 laptops going off of lease and stated rather than purchasing them or starting another lease, his recommendation was to purchase all new computers from Apple, Incorporated in the amount of $72,000.00. The board passed the appropriation.
Hile also notified the board of the need to either fix or repair a 2003 bus with 158,000 miles, which had the engine fail during a recent trip. Hile stated and the board agreed that instead of sinking money into fixing a bus that is clearly towards the end of useful life, they could purchase a new one from Uebelhor and Sons Motors in the amount of $39,495 after trade-in. The board approved the purchase.
