The Greater Jasper School Board voted Monday night to allow Scott Stenftenagel of the Stenftenagel Group to seek bids on an 800-foot drive addition at Ireland Elementary to alleviate traffic problems and safety concerns.

The traffic created when parents drop off and pick up their children from school is so bad that Dubois County Sheriff Donny Lampert addressed the issue with the school corporation. He is concerned with issues on Highway 56 created by the excess traffic at the school.

The new route designed by Gibraltar Design allows for any future expansion of the school and full use of the nearby Ireland Youth Sports fields.

The proposed entrance flow pattern is depicted in the design plans above.

Stenftenagel estimated the new drive would be in the range of $90,000.00 to build.

The drive is just one of five projects that Stenftenagel asked for permission to get quotes on so that the work could be done this summer and be ready for the fall school session. Those projects include the replacement of the roof on the north academic side of the Jasper High School North and three projects at Fifth, Tenth and Ireland Elementary Schools for interior renovations including carpeting, removing old vinyl wall covering and painting along with installing new tack boards.

Gibraltar Designs assisted by providing color and floor covering samples for the board to review.

Also in the meeting, Stenftenagel reported that bids were received on the three projects previously approved by the board: Jasper High School Kitchen Renovation project: $552,315.00 base bid with alternate 1 at a total of $573,150.00 by Seifert Construction; Fifth Street Gym Roof by Hedinger Roofing: $37,600.00; Tenth Street Gym Roof by Hedinger Roofing: $85,850.00.

Stenftenagel said that the roof projects should have a life of 20 to 25 years.

The board approved the low bids and the contractors will begin those projects in the coming weeks.

The board also:

-Approved an offer by two Boy Scouts, Boy Scouts, Bryce Segal and Nathaniel James, to install two sun shades at the Ed Yarbrough Tennis Complex this summer as their Eagle Scout projects. The two separate shades will fulfill each scout’s requirements. The two are also on the varsity tennis team.

-Heard an update from School Media Teacher Evan Elrod on new developments for the High School radio station WJWS 93.7 FM, “the Scratch”, a low-power radio station that currently operates only with enough power to cover the existing campus. The educational station just received FCC approval to go to 100 watts, which will allow the signal to cover the City of Jasper.

-Heard from curriculum director Kim Stroebel that the first round of ISTEP Plus testing is completed and the next round begins April 28th and runs through May 9th.

-Adopted textbook recommendations for English Language Arts and Foreign Languages for grades 9 through 12.
