Jasper RC Flyers annual Fun-Fly brings pilots together
The Jasper RC Flyers held their annual Fun-Fly on Saturday, August 8, bringing approximately 65 pilots, spectators, friends and family members to the club’s flying field in Jasper.
The event, which has been a Jasper RC Flyers tradition for at least 20 years, gives RC pilots from around the region an opportunity to get together, fly, and enjoy the hobby. This year’s event included 25 registered pilots, with pilots traveling from Owensboro, Evansville, Henderson, Washington and Bloomington.
Many of the visiting pilots commented on how much they enjoy coming to the Jasper event each year and getting together with other pilots.
The day included open flying, an impromptu streamer combat flight, a candy drop for the kids, and plenty of time for pilots and spectators to visit. One local family with young children also had the opportunity to try flying through the club’s buddy-box system, which allows an experienced pilot to safely share control of an airplane with someone learning to fly.
Hamburgers and brats were available throughout the day, with ice cream proving to be especially popular on the hot and humid August afternoon.
The club also welcomed the mayor of Huntingburg, who stopped by to see what the event was about. The Jasper RC Flyers were thankful for his visit and the opportunity to introduce him to the club and the hobby of radio-controlled aviation.
For the Jasper RC Flyers, however, the purpose of the Fun-Fly goes beyond the number of people attending. It is an opportunity to bring people together, introduce others to RC aviation, and continue a tradition that has been part of the club for decades.
The Jasper RC Flyers are an Academy of Model Aeronautics chartered club and place a strong emphasis on helping new pilots get started in the hobby. The club flies and provides training every Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
