Jasper Public Works; Fixing the City Mill and adding a sculpture to the Schaeffer Barn

Joe Rohleder approached the Jasper Board of Public Works to request permission to have a sculpture placed in the country garden of the Schaeffer Barn.

Rohleder stated the sculpture will be a large — over 9-feet tall — structure with a wind chime designed by Zach Dawkins. It will represent Eleanor Enlow, the wife of Joseph Enlow. The Enlows donated the original 120 acres that became the City of Jasper.

Jasper was named by Eleanor Enlow from the passage in Revelations 21:19, “and the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones . . . the first foundation was of Jasper.” The sculpture will incorporate jasper into its base.

Rohleder stated he would like to begin to fundraising after introducing the project at the Redevelop Old Jasper Action Coalition Tenth Anniversary Celebration scheduled for July 13.

The board of public works approved Rohleder’s request.[hr]

City Engineer Chad Hurm requested the city enter into a contract with VS Engineering of Evansville to design, plan and prepare the permits for the repairs to the Jasper City Mill.

The board approved the contract to not exceed $20,000 for the preparation.

According to Hurm, they are considering a green option that would incorporate vegetation to stabilize the riverbank from the mill down to just below the footbridge.[hr]

The board also approved a proposed street repair and maintenance plan from Street Commissioner Raymie Eckerle for $1.256 million. This is a proposed budget for the 2013 paving and asphalt preservation projects.
