Jasper Public Library installing security cameras
In other Jasper Public Library news the board approved the purchase of security cameras to stop vandalism and theft at the library.
Library Director Rita Douthitt sought recommendations from Astro Security of St. Anthony (Astro Security installed the security systems at the new Ferdinand Library) on some situations that have occurred recently at the library.
According to Douthitt patrons are taking library articles into the restroom and removing the electronic tags and then sneaking them out of the library. Packaging for CD’s and other items has been found in the toilets since the beginning of the year. Douhtitt stated she has personally caught an individual attempting to remove audiobooks from the library. Additionally the bathrooms have been vandalized on several occasions.
A total of eight cameras is planned for the installation and access to the the real-time video will be limited to a few individuals at the library. The goal is to potentially stop the incidents using surveillance as a deterrent or to record the activities. Cameras will not be placed in the bathrooms but will be placed to observe individuals entering and exiting. Signs will also be installed notifying the public they are under surveillance and it is hoped this will further prevent individuals from stealing or vandalizing property.
Douthitt explained the system was the same used in the Ferdinand building and it could be moved and reinstalled in another location if or when the library were to relocate.
