Jasper Parks Board approves futsal court project at Gutzweiler Park

The Jasper Parks and Recreation Board approved a proposal to convert unused pickleball courts at Gutzweiler into futsal courts, with the city contributing around $2,500 toward the project.

The city’s $2,500 contribution covers fence repairs, surface improvements, lighting restoration and labor costs. ISFC handles painting the court lines and purchasing goals for the 5-on-5 soccer format.

Greg Fuhs, representing Indiana Southwest Futball Club, presented their plan at the board’s March meeting, proposing a two-phase approach to test community interest before committing to major financial investments.

“We’re looking for a proof of concept,” Fuhs said.

The club serves around 200 youth players from elementary age through high school seniors. Representatives explained the facility addresses capacity constraints at their current indoor facility on Vine Street, which runs at full capacity Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the off-season.

“Having two more hard surface courts where we can get teams outside two or three times a week would be a huge benefit,” Fuhs said.

If the courts see heavy use during the first year, the club plans to launch a fundraising campaign to install professional futsal surfacing, estimated at $60,000 for materials. The club previously raised $30,000 to $40,000 for its indoor facility project.

Board members raised concerns about limited parking at Gutzweiler, with only four designated spaces available. Representatives acknowledged the limitation but noted most youth players get dropped off rather than staying with parents.

The facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis during the initial phase. If ISFC invests in permanent surfacing, the city may implement a scheduling system similar to shelter house reservations.
