Jasper native returns home for pop-up concert
The performance, presented by Jasper Community Arts, will be held in the arts wing of the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center on Friday, June 25, 2021, at 6:00 p.m.
Jasper native and saxophonist Lindsey Welp will return to her hometown on June 25th at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of solo saxophone music.
Interpreting the music of Evan Chambers, Claude Debussy, Yaz Lancaster, Karen Tanaka, Betsy Jolas, and Marilyn Shrude, Welp will perform in the Brett Anderson exhibit at the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center. This is an informal concert, so guests are welcome to sit and listen, as well as roam the gallery during the program. While donations to Jasper Community Arts will be accepted, this event is free and open to the public.
An advocate for the performance and curation of new music, Lindsey has commissioned composers such as Viet Cuong, Gemma Peacocke, and John Anthony Lennon, amongst others, Lindsey has performed in concerts and festivals such as ArtsX and Praecepta student composers series, and she was featured in the 2020 Bowling Green New Music Festival as a solo performer. Lindsey has presented at conferences such as the Navy International Saxophone Symposium and the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial and Regional conferences.
Recently, Lindsey was selected as the winner of the 2020 Ohio MTNA Young Performing Artist Solo Competition. In 2020, she was a semifinalist in the NASA Solo Competition in Tempe, Arizona. She was also awarded first prize in the Great Composers Concert Series Wind Concerto Competition. Lindsey has been featured as a soloist with the DePauw University Orchestra and the BGSU Philharmonia, as a winner of their respective concerto competitions. She is the soprano saxophonist with the ABRAXAS saxophone quartet.
Lindsey recently graduated from Bowling Green State University, earning her Master of Music in Performance. At BGSU, she served as the Graduate Saxophone Teaching Assistant under Distinguished Artist Professor Dr. John Sampen. She earned her B. M. in Performance and French at DePauw University under Scotty Stepp, where she was a recipient of the Joann V. White Endowed School of Music Scholarship. In the Spring of 2018, she studied with acclaimed saxophonist and pedagogue Jean-Yves Fourmeau at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Cergy-Pontoise in France. Lindsey will begin her Doctorate of Musical Arts this fall at the University of Georgia, studying under saxophonist Dr. Connie Frigo.
