Jasper man pleads guilty to federal charges

Evansville — A Jasper resident pleaded guilty on March 17 in U.S. District Court in Evansville to charges he used a government credit card to purchase over $159,000 in electronics and guns.

James N. Emmons, 35, was sentenced to 18 months in a federal prison. When he is released he will serve three years of supervised probation.

Emmons was a production facilitator at the Crane Army Ammunition Activity in Crane, Ind. Rather than take paid leave, he left his position voluntarily after the investigation began into his activities.

According to an affidavit filed in October 2013, Emmons regularly used a government credit card for his position at the Army Depot, but in 2012, federal agents found charges for computers, professional-grade sound and DJ equipment, high-dollar amplifiers and speakers, as well as numerous handguns and rifles that were not authorized by the Army.

Federal agents seized many of the items Emmons purchased, including six guns, during searches of Emmons’ home October 19, 2012 and a storage unit October 24, 2012. Emmons provided other items to the government on November 8, 2012.

He is free on bond and is set to report at a later date to serve his sentence.

According to a local pastor, he and several of Emmon’s friends asked the judge to provide a light sentence for Emmons’ crimes so Emmons could continue to provide for his wife and daughters.
