Jasper loses a close game to New York

The Jasper Babe Ruth 14 Year Old All Stars gave up a 5 -1 lead and lost a heartbreaker to New York 6 – 7 in World Series play at Moses Lake, Washington on Sunday.

New York jumped out to a 1 – 0 lead in the first, but Jasper answered with three runs in the 3rd when Connor O’Brien bunted his way on to first, Mason Thewes sacrificed O’Brien to second, Cam Heeke reached on an error, Evan Aders walked to load the bases, Reece Kleinhelter singled in one and Andrew Schmitt singled in two runners.

Jasper added two more runs in the 4th when Adam Hedinger was hit by a pitch, O’Brien reached on an error, Thewes walked to load the bases, Heeke flew out to right but scored Hedinger, and O’Brien scored on a passed ball, to take the 5-1 lead after 4.

New York came storming back in the 5th, belting 5 hits and scoring 4 runs to tie the game at 5-5, and added 2 more in the 6th to take a 7-5 lead. Jasper scored one run in the top of the 7th, but fell one run short.

Jasper managed only 4 hits to New York’s 14. New York committed 4 errors to Jasper’s 1.

Reece Kleinhelter went 7 and a 1/3 for Jasper on the mound, but got the loss.

Jasper is now 1 -1 in the 5-team National Division Pool which includes teams from New York, Kansas, Arkansas, and host Moses Lake, Washington. The top 3 teams in that division after 4 pool play games will advance to the single elimination round on Thursday.

Jasper plays Arkansas Monday at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
