Jasper Library Board begins steps to purchase property
With uncertainty behind them, the Jasper Library Board will start checking items off the grocery list leading to the construction of the new library.
The first step is purchasing the building from Ken and Paul Sternberg for $864,000 — an amount included in the referendum budget. The purchase agreement has already been completed and after the formation of a limited liability company, the property ownership transfer should be done by the end of the year.
According to the board, Fit Together and Cardinal Selling Services, the two main tenants in the former factory building, supported the referendum and are prepared to move out to accommodate the changes that are coming.
To complete the purchase of the building, the library will issue a bond. Since the library board is an unelected body, the bond issue will have to be approved by the Jasper Common Council. The Jasper Council will consider the issue at the next regular meeting Tuesday, November 22 at 7 p.m.
The Sternbergs have offered to continue to manage the facility until it is time to demolish it. That is expected to happen next year.
The board approved funding expenditures to complete the bond issue and purchase of the building. No monetary limit was named but the board approved it contingent the amount was within the cost assessments used during the referendum.
Also, Library Executive Director Christine Golden reported with the passage of the referendum, she has received two calls from individuals seeking to make donations to support the project.
