Jasper High School announces 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame class

Six inductees into the Jasper High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be honored on Saturday, September 21 at the Calumet Lake Event Plaza.

This year’s honorees are Kayla Sergesketter Walters, Mike Burger, Don Bates, Diane Seng Haynes, Josh Habig, and John Ackerman

Segesketter Walters–swimming state runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 2004 and 200 freestyle in 2007; 10-event high school All-American; two All-American honors at the University of Kentucky; and competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials.

Burger–honorable mention 1981 Football All-American; holds the JHS season record for most yard rushing; football and baseball All-State.

Bates–Fourth in Mr. Basketball voting in 1955; two-time All-State; second leading scorer for Florida State in 1959.

Seng Haynes–MVP of 1996 Hoosier Basketball All-Star Classic; two-time volleyball All-State; two-time shot put state finalist; two-time Ohio Valley Conference Female Athlete of the Year at Tennessee Tech.

Habig—two-time golf state finalist; two-time tennis All-State; third place in the 2000 Big Ten golf championship; and several high finishes on the Canadian golf tour.

Ackerman—State runner-up in 120-yard high hurdles in 1955, the highest-ever track state finals finish for a JHS boy; earned three track letters at Purdue, including some dual meet hurdles victories.

The inductees or their representatives will also be introduced at the Jasper football game on Friday, September 20.

The inductees were chosen by an anonymous 10-member selection committee.

At the September 21st banquet, the Boys’ 1974 Tennis Section Champions will be honored as this year’s Golden Anniversary Team, and the Girls’ 1999 Basketball Regional Champions will be honored as the Silver Anniversary Team.

Nominations from the public are now being accepted for the 2025 Hall of Fame class. All nominations will be kept on file to be considered in future years.
