Jasper Fourth District recount completed; Helming still ahead by 2 votes
Dubois County Clerk Amy Kippenbrock announced that Friday’s recount resulted in the same outcome reported on November 7, 2023, during the Municipal Election.
Dubois County Democratic Party Chairperson Teresa Kendall filed a recount petition with
Dubois County Circuit Court on November 22, 2023, for the City of Jasper, District Four. Election night results had Vince Helming ahead of incumbent candidate David Hurst by two votes, 257 votes to 255 votes.
A recount commission appointed by Judge Nathan Verkamp performed the recount this morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Courthouse Annex Conference Room. They concluded the recount at 10:30 a.m. with the same results reported on election night. Vince Hemling received 257 votes, and David Hurst received 255 votes.
“I am grateful to have gone through the recount process,” said Amy Kippenbrock, Dubois County Clerk. “I am proud of our election board for taking the time on election day to tally results patiently
and diligently. The outcome of the recount proves that our elections are safe, secure, and
accurate.”
Democratic Party Chair Teresa Kendall stated she and the party are satisfied with the recount results.
She affirmed that despite the results, the Democratic Party still felt it was a necessary step since the race was so close.
“It was great to see the electoral process work the way it’s supposed to,” Kendall said. “I felt like Amy, as the Dubois county Clerk, handled it very professionally.”
Kendall said they were disappointed that Mr. Hurst would no longer represent the Fourth District on the Jasper Common Council. “He’s been a wonderful city councilman, and we are thankful for his eight years of service,” she said.
