Jasper Farmers’ Market opens Saturday
Jasper — The Jasper Farmers’ Market will begin the 2013 season this Saturday, May 25th, from 7:30am to 11:30am on the green North of the Jasper Train Depot.
Our market began its mission in 2005 with the purpose to provide a source of income to local producers, fresh and local products to customers, and a gathering place to create and develop a greater sense of community. This would not be possible without the help and sponsorship of the Greater Downtown Jasper Business Association, the City of Jasper, and the Jasper Chamber of Commerce.
Our local shoppers know where their produce comes from at the Jasper Farmers’ Market. We are primarily a producer-only market that requires vendors or their family to grow what is being sold. Vendors must also reside in Dubois county or one of our surrounding counties.
Produce vendors will soon offer strawberries, radishes, peas, beets, rhubarb and other items available in early spring. In the past, our vendors have offered eggplants, cabbages, pears, apples, cantaloupe, zucchini, corn and much more when in season.
Other food vendors have eggs, beef, jellies, pie, and angel food cake for sell. They also offer noodles, honey, fresh breads, and muffins. Ketchup and barbeque sauce will be two exciting additions this year.
The Jasper Farmers’ Market also welcomes local artisans. They bring clothing, needle work, artisan soaps, doll clothes, jewelry, and carvings. All handcrafted by them. Local artists and authors will offer their paintings and children’s books.
Student and youth organizations are given the opportunity to participate in the market by selling items they may not grow or bake personally but are responsible for selling to fund raise. (Restrictions do apply.)
The market always strives to have something special happening throughout the season for customers and their children. On opening day, local chainsaw artist, Sheri Kieffner , will be demonstrating her talent. On June 1st, Santa (dressed in his summer attire) will make an appearance and on June 28th Strings, Inc. will be performing. Last year, we also saw a Hodgini’s gymnastics expo and had a Hometown Music recital. Local musicians are invited to perform any time.
