Jasper Council requests critical repairs to state highways in city
The Jasper Common Council sent a letter to the Indiana Department of Transportation regarding the state of Highways 56 and 231 in the city.
The letter was created after Councilman Tom Schmidt voiced his concerns about the roads during the April 23rd council meeting.
According to Schmidt, he is hearing feedback from residents about the highway’s poor condition as it runs through the city. Schmidt stated he thought the paving that occurred in 2013 was supposed to go all the way from the south side of Huntingburg up to the Jasper State Police Post.
INDOT, however, only paved the worst areas of 231 from Huntingburg to the State Police Post.
In the letter, the council calls for “major long-lasting improvements” to the US 231 and State Road 56.
The council points out that although these roads do not fall under the city’s responsibility, the Jasper Common Council members receive the majority of the complaints from the citizens of the city.
Calling upon the importance of the two roads in regards to statewide traffic, the letter states the hard winter and lack of repairs and maintenance by INDOT have caused the roads to need critical repairs.
The letter is signed by each council member and is dated April 29th.
