Jasper Chamber warns of recent business scam

The Jasper Chamber is reporting that a local business almost fell victim to a scam involving a large purchase order.

According to the unnamed business, an individual who identified himself as Shawn Hendrix from Los Angeles, Calif., contacted them to purchase a large amount of material to be shipped to Hawaii.

The caller, Hendrix, told the business he had a preferred shipper and he would prepay for the material with a credit card while the local business would cover the cost of the freight. Hendrix would then send them a check to cover the costs of the shipping.

However, the business owner did some research and determined this type of scam is somewhat common and has been around for years. The scammer uses a stolen credit card to pay for the materials and then sticks the business with the shipping costs of the materials.

The chamber wanted to ensure other businesses in the area were aware of the scammers that could be contacting them in the future.
