James E. “Big Jim” Meyer, 87

James E. “Big Jim” Meyer, 87, of Huntingburg, passed away at 5:00 p.m.on Thursday, June 4, 2015, at his home.
He was born March 20, 1928 in Ferdinand to Joseph and Bridget (Becher) Meyer. He married LaVerne A. Schmitt on July 18, 1953.
Mr. Meyer retired from the United States Postal Service where he was a rural mail carrier in Huntingburg for 30 years. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and served as a combat medic during his tour of duty in Korea. Mr. Meyer was also a full-time farmer; he enjoyed spending his time outdoors and on his farm.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg; the V.F.W. Post #2366 in Huntingburg; and the American Legion Post #124 in Ferdinand.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne A. Meyer, who passed away on August 21, 2014; three brothers, Louis Meyer, Eugene Meyer and Adolph Meyer; and one sister, Rita Oser.
He is survived by 10 children with seven sons and three daughters, Joe (wife: Lori) Meyer of Shawnee, Kansas, Ed (wife: Donna) Meyer of Huntingburg, Art Meyer of Brownsburg, Ind., Randy (wife: Mary) Meyer of Spring Hill, Kansas, Pat (wife: Barb) Meyer of Huntingburg, Paul Meyer of Brownsburg, Ind., Mary Jo (husband: Jake) Fischer of Huntingburg, Bob (wife: Eileen) Meyer of Huntingburg, Nancy Rahman of Fenton, Miss. and Cathy (husband: Rich) Tretter of Huntingburg; one sister, Clara Wuetcher of Diamond Bar, Cali.; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for James E. Meyer will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail and members of the American Legion Post #124.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday; and also from 9:00 to 9:40 a.m. Monday. A parish rosary prayer service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Nass & Son Chapel.
